THE VEIL

Traditionally, brides have been thought to be particularly vulnerable to evil spirits and many of the customs and traditions associated with weddings are to provide protection. The veil was originally worn by Roman brides. It was thought that it would disguise the bride and therefore outwit malevolent spirits.

The veil became popular in Britain in the eighteen hundreds. In this country it is associated with modesty and chastity.

Our  veils are from the very best of manufacturers in the U.K. and we are able to offer any combination of colour, size & design. The style & length of veil you choose depends on the style of your wedding dress & the look you wish to create.

Lengths

Standard lengths (from comb to hem - 2nd tier length) are:

                                                                                        45" - shoulder length

                                                                                        54" - waist length

                                                                                        72" - hip length

                                                                                        108" - floor length

                                                                                        126"  - train

                                                                                        144" - cathedral

but any size in between these can be catered for.

The size includes the train (the longest part) & the 'blusher' (the shortest part sometimes worn over the face).

Combing Variations

Standard veils are two-tier but single tier & three tier veils are also available. Our standard veils are 'half combed' - this means there is a gather at the comb with a 'drop' on each side. We can also supply veils 'full combed' which means there is maximum fullness at the comb with no drop on each side or 'flat combed' where the veil has no gather and lays flat on the head.

Colours

Veils are available in white, off white, ivory, pale gold, toffee, oyster, blush pink, pale blue, lilac, lavender, red, black, silver, gold & shocking pink!!! We have a colour swatch in store for you to look at.

Materials

We offer traditional 'net' veils as well as chiffon & organza veils.

Edges

Russia braid - a cord of approx. 3mm sewn onto the edge of the veil which is quite firm & best used as a straight edge or in rows.

Ribbon edge - a bias ribbon available in 5mm or 10mm finished width sewn onto the edge of the veil. These are available in dull & shiny satin finishes. You can also have organza ribbon edges.

Flat tape - a 5mm wide tape stiched onto the veil edge. It is softer & more pliable than Russia braid & lends itself to scallop edges.

Embroidered - a chain stich to embroider many variations of patterns on veils. Self colours & metallics available.

Pearl - a string of pearls which is sewn onto the edge of the veil.

Wired - an insert of monofilament placed inside an oversewn edge to give a 'curly' effect.

Oversewn - an overlocked edge which is available as a straight edge or in various sizes of scallop.

Scalloped - this is available in 2.5", 5" , 7"& 10" scallops around the edge.

Handkerchief - this offers square points around the edge of the veil.

Decoration

This is a good way of adding some details to your veil and are available in pearls or diamontes in various colours as well as embroidery. You can have various amount of 'scatter', flower detail made from crystals as well as crystal drop detail from the edge of the veil. We have swatches for you to view in store.

Lace Veils

We know how hard it is to match the right veil with a lace trimmed dress so we offer a service of edging a veil with your own lace. Prices vary depending on the type of lace required - for instance: beaded lace may require hand sewing.

We have an excellent selection in store for you to browse through.
